President of the Republic Joseph Aoun continued his meetings at Baabda Palace, receiving the President of the General Syndicate of Employees and Workers in Wired and Wireless International Telecommunications in Lebanon, Emily Nassar, accompanied by a delegation from the syndicate’s executive council.

The delegation briefed the President on their current situation and submitted a series of demands aimed at ensuring fairness for workers, most notably amending Article 49 of Law No. 431/2002, which they said has become inconsistent with current economic realities and subsequent legislation. They also presented a study on the impact of privatizing the telecommunications sector on employees’ rights, stressing the pivotal role of the Compensation Fund benefiting public institutions under Law No. 161 and the need to safeguard it against any decisions that could undermine its sustainability. In addition, the delegation raised the issue of daily-paid workers at Ogero and called for addressing the retroactive effect of the minimum wage decree.

President Aoun expressed interest in the delegation’s demands and pledged to study them with Minister of Telecommunications Charles Hajj and Ogero Director General Ahmad Oueidat, while giving priority to addressing the most urgent issues.

President Aoun also received the President of the Federation of Agricultural Syndicates in Lebanon, Youssef Mohieddine, along with George Youssef Kallas. The delegation submitted a memorandum outlining key demands, including approving a dedicated budget for the federation similar to that of the General Confederation of Lebanese Workers; activating the Land Survey Law of 1939 to regularize land ownership—given that Lebanon has around 400,000 hectares of private land, 300,000 of which are held in common ownership—a step they said could generate revenues of up to $2 billion for the state; and extending social security coverage to farmers and agricultural workers, in line with a memorandum previously issued by the Minister of Labor and discussed before the parliamentary agriculture committee.

President Aoun reaffirmed his interest in Lebanon’s agricultural sector and the need to protect domestic agricultural production, pledging to study the demands with Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani and relevant sector stakeholders.
