Watch: Torrential Floods Trigger Full Alert

Moroccan television reported that the government has deployed army rescue forces to help evacuate thousands of people after floods, caused by heavy rains and rising river levels, inundated roads in northern parts of the country.

Reuters cited one of the committees monitoring the floods, saying that weeks of continuous heavy rainfall, combined with the release of water from a nearly full nearby dam, caused water levels to rise in the Loukkos Valley and flooded several neighborhoods in Ksar El-Kebir, located about 190 kilometers north of the capital, Rabat.

Official media reported that more than 20,000 people have been moved to shelters and camps, and authorities have placed sandbags and temporary barriers in flood-prone areas. As a precaution, schools in Ksar El-Kebir have been ordered closed until February 7.

In the neighboring Sidi Kacem province, rising levels of the Sebou River prompted authorities to evacuate several villages and raise the alert and emergency response levels.
