Anticipation Builds for Major Astronomical Phenomenon

A solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or completely blocking sunlight from reaching certain areas of the Earth’s surface.

Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics announced that the solar eclipse of 2026 will take place on Tuesday, February 17. The sky will witness an annular solar eclipse, a type in which the Moon does not fully cover the Sun’s disk, leaving a bright ring around it known as the “ring of fire.” This type of eclipse is less common than a partial eclipse and attracts wide attention due to its distinctive visual nature and scientific importance.

According to the institute, the path of the annular eclipse will pass through several regions around the world, while other countries will experience a partial eclipse to varying degrees.

The timing of the eclipse’s peak will vary depending on geographic location, and detailed information on visibility percentages and exact timings in Egypt will be announced later.

The institute reiterated its warnings against looking directly at the Sun during the eclipse without proper protection, stressing that regular sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection for the eyes. Egyptian media reported that specialized eclipse-viewing glasses or indirect viewing methods, such as safe projection techniques, should be used to avoid potential damage to the retina.

It also confirmed that detailed statements will be issued in the coming period, including eclipse visibility percentages across Egypt’s governorates and the best viewing times, urging the public to verify information and avoid unreliable sources circulating online.

The annular eclipse represents an important opportunity for researchers to study the layers of the Sun’s atmosphere and the movement of celestial bodies with greater precision, and it also draws strong interest from astronomy enthusiasts following its official announcement.
