Asmar: Withdrawal of VAT increase marks victory for workers, low-income groups

2/26/2026 2:04:16 PM

General Labor Confederation President Bechara Asmar said the decision not to proceed with the proposed 1% VAT increase represents a victory for workers, low-income families and members of the military.

Asmar noted that Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s openness to reconsider fuel-related fees, once alternative funding sources are secured, reflects the union’s efforts to challenge recent tax and fee hikes.

Asmar stressed that the CGTL will continue advocating for policies that ease economic pressures and ensure a minimum standard of decent living amid the country’s ongoing financial hardships.
