MoFA Files Complaint to UN Security Council Regarding Israeli Airstrikes on April 8, 2026

Lebanon's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants stated in a letter that, "Based on Cabinet Decision No. 14 dated 9/4/2026, it has instructed Lebanon’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations to submit an urgent complaint to the Security Council and the Secretary-General, regarding the Israeli airstrikes on April 8, 2026, which targeted several Lebanese areas, particularly the capital, Beirut. The Ministry also requested that the complaint be circulated as an official document to the General Assembly and the Security Council."
The letter noted that "this escalation is considered the most severe since March 2, as the number of airstrikes reached approximately 100 within less than ten minutes. These strikes targeted densely populated residential areas during peak hours and without prior warning, resulting in widespread destruction and hundreds of casualties, the majority of whom were unarmed civilians. The death toll reached 303, including 30 children and 71 women, while the number of injured stood at 1,150, including 143 children and 358 women. The letter also highlighted the attacks on medical and emergency institutions since March 2, 2026, including 17 attacks on hospitals and 101 attacks on emergency services, which led to the killing of 73 paramedics and the injury of 176 others."
The letter affirmed that "these attacks constitute a blatant violation of the principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, and international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 on the protection of civilians in times of war, and the First Additional Protocol of 1977, which enshrines the principle of distinction, as well as UN Security Council resolutions 2175 (2014) and 2286 (2016) regarding the protection of humanitarian personnel."
