While the United States and Iran continue exchanging draft framework proposals aimed at ending hostilities, U.S. President Donald Trump is also reportedly considering the possibility of new military action in an effort to break the current deadlock.
Speaking on Sunday, Trump said in response to a question about whether he would authorize renewed strikes: “That is a possibility if they misbehave, if they do something wrong… but right now we’ll see.”
His remarks came after Iran submitted an updated 14-point framework proposal to the United States through Pakistan last Thursday.
One-month deadline proposal
According to two sources familiar with the proposal, it includes a one-month timeline to negotiate an agreement aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending what it describes as a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, and bringing a permanent end to the conflict in both Iran and Lebanon, according to Axios.
The sources added that a new round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program would only begin after such an agreement is reached, followed by an additional month-long period.
Trump had earlier told reporters that he would review the Iranian proposal, before signaling in a post on Truth Social that he was unlikely to accept it. “I will look at it and get back to you,” he said, adding that he had been briefed on its contents and would soon receive the full wording.
He later wrote on Truth Social that he did not consider the proposal acceptable, arguing that Iran had not yet “paid a sufficiently high price” for what he described as its actions over the past 47 years against humanity and the world.
Military considerations and regional tensions
It was also reported that Trump reviewed updated military strike plans against Iran during a meeting with the commander of U.S. Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, who later traveled to the region and met troops aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli in the Arabian Sea.
On the Iranian side, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy head of inspections at the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, said that a renewed conflict with the United States remains a real possibility, according to the Fars News Agency. He added that past events had shown that the United States does not adhere to its commitments, stressing that Iranian armed forces are fully prepared for any “adventure or reckless action” by Washington.
Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the “ball is now in Washington’s court,” which must choose between diplomacy and confrontation. He added that Tehran is prepared for both paths in order to safeguard its national interests and security.
