A strong earthquake struck off the coast of the Calabria region in southern Italy and was felt across a wide area extending as far as Naples, according to Italian media reports.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the earthquake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, while the United States Geological Survey estimated its magnitude at 6.2.

The quake occurred in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Cosenza in southern Italy at a depth of about 250 kilometers, which contributed to it being felt across a broad area.

According to the Italian news agency ANSA, residents throughout Calabria felt the tremor, and its effects extended northward to Naples and eastward to the Basilicata region.

No casualties or material damage have been reported so far, while authorities continue assessment and verification operations in the affected areas.
