One person was killed and five others were injured in a suspected shooting attack in central Israel, according to Israel’s emergency services.

Israeli police said a suspect in the shooting was “neutralized,” while another was arrested, without providing further details.

The Israel Broadcasting Authority reported that the attack began at the entrance to the settlement of Kokhav Yair before spreading to the entrances of the nearby towns of Tzur Yitzhak and Tzur Natan. Medical teams transferred five injured people to hospital, with two in serious condition and three moderately injured.

It added that police forces opened fire on one of the attackers, killing him on the spot, while the second attacker initially managed to flee before later being arrested.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said Benjamin Netanyahu is leading a security assessment to follow up on the implications of what it described as a “deadly” armed attack, adding that he is being updated continuously on developments.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the “terrible attack in the heart of the Sharon region is a bloody wake-up call for the deep change that must take place among Arab citizens of Israel,” adding that “hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons, including anti-tank missiles, heavy machine guns, and explosives, along with widespread crime and nationalist incitement, pose an existential threat.” He also claimed that “a dangerous and extremist terrorist network seeking to destroy the State of Israel is growing before our eyes.”

Yedioth Ahronoth reported that one of the attackers is from the town of Taybeh and is known to police, with a history of previous criminal incidents.
