Aoun Praises US–Iran Agreement, Citing Respect for Lebanon’s Special Status

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun issued the following statement:
“I have followed with interest the announcement of the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and its confirmation of a halt to military operations and escalation in the region, including Lebanon.
In this context, I commend the inclusion in this memorandum of respect for Lebanon’s specificity, and the recognition that Lebanon’s stability and security are an integral part of any serious effort to consolidate stability in the region, after the major sacrifices and burdens borne by the Lebanese people during the past period.
The Lebanese people, especially those in areas that were subjected to attacks and destruction and who lost loved ones, livelihoods, and homes, now look forward to these understandings being translated into concrete steps that put a definitive end to the cycle of violence and establish a phase of stability, security, recovery, and reconstruction.
I also extend my thanks to all countries and parties that contributed to the completion of this memorandum, and to everyone who worked to include Lebanon in efforts aimed at ending escalation and halting military operations on various fronts, in recognition of the scale of suffering endured by the Lebanese people in recent months.
Lebanon hopes this development marks the beginning of a broader path that strengthens regional stability, preserves states’ sovereignty and peoples’ rights, and allows Lebanese citizens to focus on rebuilding what was destroyed and returning to normal life under a secure and stable state.”
