Lebanese President Joseph Aoun received a phone call this afternoon from U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which they discussed the latest developments in Lebanon and the post-Switzerland meetings phase.
Vance and Rubio affirmed U.S. support for the positions of the Lebanese President and government in their efforts to extend the authority of the legitimate state and strengthen its national sovereignty over all its territory exclusively through its army and security forces, and to enable it to fulfill its commitments in this regard.
They also stressed that the United States is following up on the implementation of what was agreed in the Switzerland meetings, including the formation of a trilateral cell involving the United States, Lebanon, and the Islamic Republic of Iran to solidify the ceasefire in Lebanon and monitor the implementation of related measures. They noted that arrangements regarding the structure and functioning of this mechanism are currently being studied.
President Aoun, in turn, thanked the U.S. Vice President and Secretary of State for the attention the United States is giving to Lebanon, aimed at ending the war and strengthening the authority of the Lebanese state and the independence of its decision-making, as it alone is responsible for preserving national sovereignty and the safety and dignity of the Lebanese people.
