US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a meeting on Iran will be held in Doha on Tuesday, without providing further details.
Writing in capital letters on social media, Trump said: "Iran has requested a meeting, and it will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) in Doha." Earlier on Monday, Trump reiterated that Iran "will not have a nuclear weapon."
A source told Reuters on Monday that technical teams from Iran and the United States tasked with implementing the memorandum of understanding will meet in Doha in the coming days, after reciprocal strikes threatened to undermine the fragile agreement between the two sides.
The source, who is familiar with the talks, said mediators are establishing communication channels to de-escalate any incidents, and that technical discussions are set to continue.
A senior Iranian source also told Reuters on Monday that a meeting will be held in Doha on Tuesday. However, unlike previous technical talks between Tehran and Washington held in Switzerland, the focus will be on managing the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions.
The United States and Iran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at ending the war that began on February 28. The memorandum included an agreement to halt hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass.
The closure of the strait had pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel, triggering another surge in global inflation and creating political pressure on Trump as fuel prices rose just months ahead of the US midterm congressional elections.
The agreement paves the way for a 60-day period of more in-depth negotiations on complex and contentious issues, foremost among them Iran's nuclear program.
