US President Donald Trump announced that he would immediately begin measures to protect the Strait of Hormuz, saying that America would be the "guardian of the strait."
He said: "We are reinstating the Iranian blockade, so named because it is limited to preventing Iranian ships or those dealing with Iran from entering or leaving the strait. All other countries will continue to enjoy free and open access to the strait."
Trump added: "Based on the principles of fairness and justice, we will charge a 20% fee on the value of all shipments passing through, to cover any and all costs required to carry out the mission of providing safety and security in this highly volatile region of the world."
