The White House has announced that U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, capping off a weekend of events related to the tournament.
Trump will first travel to New York City on Friday to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower before heading to MetLife Stadium on Sunday for the final between Spain and Argentina.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, speaking during her first press briefing since returning from maternity leave, said: "The president will travel to New York City on Friday to attend a reception hosted by FIFA at Trump Tower, and on Sunday he will attend the World Cup match between Spain and Argentina."
She added that Trump's attendance "will mark the culmination of the most watched, safest, and most successful FIFA World Cup in U.S. history."
Trump sparked controversy during the tournament despite not attending any matches, most notably when he claimed he had personally asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider the suspension of U.S. forward Folarin Balogun after he received a red card in the United States' match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The 2026 World Cup title will be decided between Argentina and Spain, while France and England will face off in the third-place playoff.
