Moaz Al Khatib: to establish a Higher Islamic Council in Syria that would elect a Grand Mufti

The resigning head of the Syrian National Coalition, Ahmad Moaz Al Khatib, called for the establishment of a Higher Islamic Council in Syria that will in turn elect a Grand Mufti.

"I call on the reverent clerics to establish a Higher Islamic Council in Syria that would elect one of the nation's righteous and sapient clerics as a Grand Mufti. Such step will deter chaos, corruption and doctrinal strife", Al Khatib tweeted.

Moreover, he demanded to submit a memorandum before the UNESCO, denouncing the destruction of Al Omari Mosque and considering it as an archeological and cultural crime "committed by the regime against our people and religion".
