Orthodox Christians mark Good Friday in Jerusalem's Old City

01/01/0001

Holding wooden crosses, thousands of Orthodox Christians took to the narrow streets of Jerusalem's Old City in a sombre procession to mark Good Friday.
The pilgrims walked along the 14 stations of the  "Via Dolorosa", Latin for "Way of the Suffering", retracing what tradition says were Jesus' last steps before his crucifixion.
The processions will be followed by an overnight vigil at the traditional site of Christ's crucifixion and burial.
The Good Friday procession ended at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where many Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
On Saturday there will be the ancient ceremony of the "holy fire", in which a candle said to have been miraculously ignited is passed among worshippers.
Orthodox Christians, who follow the old, Julian calendar, mark Easter this week; Roman Catholic and Protestant congregations that observe the new, Gregorian calendar, held their Easter celebrations at the end of March.
