President Michel Sleiman condemned the "terrorist" explosion that ripped through Beirut southern suburb, deeming it aims at distabilizing the country and shaking the Lebanese people's resistance.

"The blast targets the entire nation and all the Lebanese people, not solely the southern suburb of Beirut," he noted.

In a statement issued Thursday, Sleiman said the blast, which targeted civilians to convey political messages, bears the earmark of terrorism and Israel.

The president stressed that the explosion shall not alter the Lebanese people's principles and values, saying it must motivate politicians and citizens to "stand united under the ceiling of the state".

The president called on security, military and judicial authorities to exert utmost efforts in order to unveil the perpetrators, demanding strict and intensive monitoring of vulnerable regions and the country's borders.
