Prominent Lebanese Singer Dies at 92

Lebanese prominent singer Wadih al-Safi died Friday night at the age of 92, leaving a legacy that would forever have a resounding impact in the world of music.

The renowned singer and songwriter, who was known as "the voice of Lebanon” and “the golden throat,” passed away at the Belle Vue Medical Center after being admitted to the hospital as he had suffered a stroke.

Wadih al-Safi, who hails from the Chouf village of Niha, began his artistic journey at the age of seventeen when he took part in a singing contest held by the Lebanese Radio and was chosen the winner among fifty other competitors.

Wadih El Safi is a classically trained tenor, having studied at the Beirut National Conservatory of Music. With a catalogue of some 3,000 songs, Safi was best known for popular and folk themes in his music, but also sang Lebanese and Arabic poetry.

Al-Safi’s funeral ceremony is set to take place on Monday at the Saint George Church in Beirut.
