Paris stands cautiously after the story of U.S. spying on its citizens and summons US Ambassador immediately to question him on claims about large-scale spying on French citizens’ phone calls by the U.S. National Security Agency.

Upon his arrival at the European session in Luxemburg, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, said that he had called in the U.S. ambassador.

Allegations were first published in Le Monde French newspaper about U.S. National Security Agency large-scale spying on French citizens based on its former contractor Edward Snowden documents.

The paper says on its website that the U.S. National Security Agency spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France in just 30 days between December 10, 2012 and January 8, 2013.

“Documents unveiled by Snowden in June have detailed techniques used to spy on confidential data or French private life”, said the paper.
The American NSA reportedly carries out its espionage in France using a program which is able to listen in on specific telephone calls and pick up on text messages according to key words used.

Moreover, the spying was not just limited to citizens suspected of being involved in terrorism. According to the data, the American NSA also eavesdropped on politicians and business figures in France.
