Former Mexican president says U.S. spied on him

Another former Mexican leader said Wednesday that he was spied on by the United States following reports that U.S. intelligence agencies snooped on President Enrique Pena Nieto and his predecessor.

Former president Vicente Fox said Wednesday that "of course" he was spied on when he was in power between 2000-2006 following reports of U.S. snooping on his successors, Felipe Calderon and Enrique Pena Nieto.

"One must be used to that," Fox told MVS Radio during a trip to Madrid, adding that the spying began before he took office.

"During my election campaign, they followed me step by step, every day, filming and recording," he said.

But Fox downplayed such intelligence activities by the country's northern neighbor, saying that all governments, including Mexico's, spy on each other.

"It's nothing new that there's espionage in every government in the world, including Mexico," he said. "I don't understand the scandal."
