Preventable diseases re-emerge amid blockade on Syria

The blockade on Syria has resulted in the re-emergence of illnesses such as infantile paralysis and aleppo boil which have not been seen for ten years in the country, the Syrian National Coalition of Opposition and Revolutionary Forces (SNCORF) stated on Thursday.
The Assad regime's blockade of humanitarian aid to regions occupied by the opposition causes a humanitarian crisis due to grave famine and illnesses threatening the health of civilians, particularly children, the Syrian opposition said in a statement.
Stating that the blockade resulted in the re-emergence of illnesses which had not plagued society for over a decade, such as measles, pertussis and aleppo boil, the statement noted, “The Assad regime wants to suffocate the people living in regions occupied by opposition forces by preventing the entrance of humanitarian aid.”
The World Health Organization’s statement a few weeks ago likewise indicates they had come across two victims of infantile paralysis in Syria for the first time in 14 years.
