A 10-year-old Chinese boy leapt 30 floors to his death after failing to complete a written apology assigned by his teacher.

The student’s teacher had ordered him to write a 1000-character apology for talking during a test. The boy failed to complete the assignment, in which the teacher allegedly told the boy to jump off a building.

A Chinese media report quotes relatives and neighbors who verify the teacher’s request. The boy appears to have followed through with the order, as his backpack was discovered on the roof off the building he jumped from.

Written inside one of the boy’s school-books was a heartbreaking note, “Teacher, I can’t do it.”

The boy, who lived with his grandparents, jumped from the roof of the flat that his family lived in, striking a car parked beneath the building.

His family, understandably devastated and furious with the teacher, posted a banner outside of the school that read, “The teacher forced our kid to jump off the building.”

An official in the Jinjiang district, where the incident occurred, has stated that the investigation continues, though he refused to comment further.

However, the boy’s school maintains his death was an accident.
