Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher is said to be woken up and recognized his wife after more than three months in a coma.
In an unexpected statement on Friday, Sabine Kehm, the family's spokesperson, announced that Formula One legend has woken up from the artificial coma and recognized his wife.
"However waking up from the artificial coma is hard since he's under the influence of painkillers, he wakes up some time and goes back to coma another time," she commented to RTL Geman TV station.
Kehm also stressed that she will make no more statements, respecting Schumacher's privacy, “because the time will come when he will communicate with the media by himself, if he deems the matter necessary,” according to her words.
The 45-year-old German suffered severe head injuries after a skiing fall at the end of December, and is being treated in a French hospital, when he fell and hit his head on a rock while skiing in French Alps.
Doctors put him in a coma to ease the pressure on his brain. They have been reducing the sedatives in an attempt to wake him since the end of January.
Schumacher is seven-time world champion in Formula 1 between 1994-2004.
