This might seem like a scene from some Hollywood feature film that would bring tears to your eyes while you chortle and chuckle over the harmless mishap that befallen the protagonist … In this case, the protagonist is a female Saudi national who got trapped inside a supermarket.
Oblivious to standard closing times in Lebanon or having just lost track of time, a woman who had been living in Saudi Arabia for more than a decade was taken by surprise on her first day in the country.
With her husband back in Saudi Arabia, she closed the door behind her, leaving three children at home with the maid; things had to be made, shopping to be done, food to be bought and cooked.
Stepping into a renowned supermarket located on the Metn coastal highway at a belated hour, time seemed to fly as she shopped for necessities for her empty house. Finally hitting the cashier, the shopper was surprised by the fact that the supermarket had closed and that the doors were locked.
The supermarket prisoner quickly went into a panic attack, screaming frozen in place by fear of remaining confined until opening hours, for she did not know what to do and did not have her mobile phone while her kids were at home. As she calmed down, she headed to the nearest exit where a security officer was on his night watch. She started banging on the doors, calling out for help to the man who was standing a mere thirty meters away from her, but in vain. Being close to the highway and surrounded by all that commotion, he was not able to hear her pleading calls for help.
It took the poor woman almost twenty minutes to get the security personnel's attention, prompting him to call a colleague of his to open the doors. Amid all the blame-chucking and depiction of the horrific accident, the security officer apologized to the woman, telling her that speakers were broken down and apologized over and over again for the staff's lack of attention as they were supposed to supervise the supermarket prior to closing.
