Wedding Turns into Inferno near Casino du Liban

Maybe it is the time to use harsh words to resolve this issue.

The Ministry of Interior should take stricter rules so as to curb the fireworks phenomenon, being deemed as a prime condition for fires that are ravaging what is left of Lebanon's green spaces.

Fireworks and firecrackers companies should opt for "buy one, get a fire free" as a slogan.

A wedding ceremony was taking place Thursday at Casino du Liban, where the sky was lightened up with fireworks. But while the groom and bride were joyfully watching the display, a spark set ablaze the green space surrounding the venue.

The fire soon burned out of control while the fireworks show carried on.

We shall not tackle the amount of money being squandered on such displays in a country that has been constantly in doldrums. People are free to spend their money as they please, but what about the authorities? Until when they will keep on turning a blind eye to the use of fireworks, causing material damage and casualties in addition to disturbing people, especially at night in residential neighborhoods?

The phenomenon of setting off fireworks during all occasions, particularly social, national and religious ones, has become common across the country. Expressing happiness by using fireworks, however, often leads to the distress of others.

The state should either ban fireworks and firecrackers or impose high customs tariffs leading to the increase of their prices. Hence those who wish to use them should pay a "high price" that will, anyway, be deemed as less significant than the compensation that we will bear to restore the devastated green spaces.

By the way, "congrats for the newly-wed couple" and we advise them to donate the money garnered from their marriage list to the Firefighting Department.
