The Downside of the New Traffic Law

Several laws in Lebanon are inscribed, approved and later on forgotten. The smoking ban was one of them and it’s to be followed by the new traffic law soon.

The new law said to be put into action on April 1 surprised the Lebanese as it is almost impossible to understand and/or apply on Lebanon’s roads.

Secretary of the Car Rentals Syndicate in Lebanon Jean Claude Ghosn told MTV Website that said law is unclear and will certainly strike the car rental sector, leading up to potential bankruptcy.

Ghosn added that the law is inapplicable in Lebanon due to the corruption plaguing this country, noting that those on the receiving end of the traffic tickets will suffer the most whether through fines or jail time.

“We held a meeting with Justice Minister Ashraf Rifi and Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouk regarding our concerns over this law,” he said, adding that the sector had already been suffering before said law.

Ghosn concluded that the country isn’t logistically ready for the application of the new traffic regulations.
