Bassil says failure to agree on new election is 'shameful'

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil blasted the failure to agree on a new election law as "shameful," stressing that the sought voting system must reinforce unity among the Lebanese.

 

"It is such a shame that we, the Lebanese, have defeated the Israeli enemy and terrorism, while we fail to agree on an electoral law," Bassil told the Lebanese Diaspora in Gabon.

 

"It is such a shame that we are still governed by a law from the 1960, and we are unable to develop our political life," he said.

 

"As Muslims and Christians, we must not accept to defeat the enemy while we are unable to build a state," he corroborated. "Muslims must defend Christians when they are marginalized and vice versa."

 

Bassil's remarks came during a gathering hosted by the Lebanese Embassy in Libreville last night.
