A grief-stricken dog refused to leave its dead companion after it was run over by a car in south-west China.
The heart-wrenching moment captured on Tuesday in Daying county, Sichuan province shows the lifeless body of a cream-coloured dog in a bush on the side of a road, with a black pooch guarding over it.
Witnesses said that the dog would bark fiercely and ward off anyone who came too close to its friend.
It is unclear if the dogs were strays.
'I was driving past the junction when I saw the two dogs,' a woman told video news site Pear.
'The white dog got run over by a car and the black one wouldn't leave its side,' she said.
Footage shows the dog appearing to be on high alert and pricking up its ears whenever a car whizzed past.
It was also heard barking loudly at the cameraman when he approached to take a closer shot.
'Whenever we walked towards it, the black dog would want to bite us,' the woman said.
'Such a poor dog. I wondered if anyone in this neighbourhood lost their dogs,' she added. 'Or maybe someone can come and adopt the black dog.'
Net users, many of them animal lovers, were saddened by the incident.
'A lot of times animals show more devotion and commitment than humans do,' one user said on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo.
'This really is true friendship,' another user said.
'This is so touching,' one comment read. 'I hope someone can adopt it and keep it safe.'
