Johannah Deakin, the mother of the singer-songwriter and One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, has died at the age of 42 following a battle with leukaemia.

A statement released by her husband Dan Deakin read: “It is with immeasurable sadness that Johannah Deakin’s family said goodbye to Johannah in the early hours of Wednesday 7th December 2016.

“Earlier this year Johannah was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukaemia that required immediate and continuous treatment.

“We respectfully request that the family are given time and space to grieve in private.”

Deakin, who was born Johannah Poulston, married her husband in 2014, and was a mother of seven.

“Johannah was first and foremost a truly amazing mother to seven children - Louis (24), Lottie (18), Félicité (16), and two sets of twins, Phoebe and Daisy (12) and Ernest and Doris (2)  - whose individual talents and success are testament to the principles and beliefs she instilled in them," Deakin said in his statement.

“She was also an incredibly proud grandmother to Freddie," he added, referring to Tomlinson's son with Brianna Jungwirth, Freddie Reign, who was born in January 2016.

The grieving husband also described his late wife as an "incredibly selfless" individual, who was known for her charity work, and for helping people in need.

Deakin's instagram account, which she last used in September, is filled with pictures of the mother and her children, including the moving photograph below, which shows Louis as a baby.

One Direction fans and friends of Tomlinson, including Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and former bandmate Zayn Malik, have taken to social media to share their sorrow and offer messages of support, with many using the hashtag #RIPJohannah.

It has been reported that, despite his recent bereavement, Tomlinson will still take part in a planned performance on the X Factor this Saturday.
