Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has given Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 24 hours to order the removal of 40 Palestinian memorials and monuments across the occupied West Bank, Israel’s Channel 14 reported.
According to the channel, Smotrich issued the demand after Netanyahu condemned far-right Knesset member Tzvi Sukkot for destroying a Palestinian memorial. Smotrich called on Israeli institutions to take responsibility for removing what he described as “infrastructure for incitement.”
Smotrich reportedly attached a list of 40 monuments and memorials located in various parts of the West Bank, claiming that they commemorate Palestinians who carried out attacks against Israel. He urged Netanyahu to immediately instruct the Israeli military to dismantle all of them within 24 hours.
In his letter, Smotrich said the monuments had stood for years in areas near Israeli communities, arguing that no “systematic and sufficient” action had been taken to remove them.
