President of the Republic Joseph Aoun afternoon received at Baabda Palace, Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, in the presence of Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Youssef Rggi, and Finnish Ambassador to Lebanon Anne Meskanen.
President Aoun informed the Finnish Minister that "Lebanon is committed to the continued presence of the UNIFIL force in south Lebanon, given the important role it plays in maintaining security and stability in the region, in implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701." President Aoun appreciated "the Finnish contingent's participation within UNIFIL, and saluted the sacrifices of its men in the service of peace."
President Aoun stressed that "the presence of the Lebanese Army together with the UNIFIL peacekeepers in the south reassures the residents of the border area, who are looking forward to Israel's withdrawal from the hills it occupies, a cessation of hostilities, and the implementation of what was agreed upon last November."
President Aoun emphasized the ongoing coordination between the army and UNIFIL, as well as the social, health, humanitarian, and educational services provided by the international force to the residents of the towns where it is deployed, and the economic benefits of its presence.
President Aoun also briefed the Finnish minister on the government's reform efforts and filling key positions in state administrations, as well as the outcomes of his visits to a number of Gulf countries.
Minister Valtonen, in turn, expressed her joy for visiting Lebanon and congratulating President Aoun on his election as President of the Republic. The Finnish Minister emphasized “the strong relations between Lebanon and Finland and her country’s participation within UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in south Lebanon." She expressed her desire to activate and develop the bilateral relations in all areas, in addition to facilitating the work of investors in both countries.
