The Ministry of Finance completed this afternoon the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the Medium-Term Fiscal Framework (MTFF) which took place last week. This includes the basic principles upon which financial policies for the next phase will be based, capable of ensuring the strengthening of financial stability and stimulating sustainable growth.
A statement from the Finance Ministry indicated that "a review was conducted of the preliminary data compiled by the International Monetary Fund delegation through its meetings with administrations and institutions concerned with financial and economic affairs, which showed that solutions are possible and amenable to positive treatment, especially with the Lebanese state proceeding with the reform measures it is pursuing."
The statement added, "the negotiations aim to establish a realistic and flexible medium-term financial framework that takes into account current economic challenges, enhances transparency and fiscal discipline, and reinforces commitment to structural reforms and the implementation of more effective spending tools in line with developmental and social priorities."
Today's meeting was attended by Finance Minister Yassin Jaber, as well as Lebanon’s Minister of Economy and Trade Amer al-Bisat, Director General of Ministry of Finance, Georges Maarawi, and Deputy Governor of the Banque du Liban, Salim Chahine, along with a team of experts from the Central Bank, financial and economic advisors from the Lebanese Presidency of the Republic and the Government, as well as advisors and experts from the Ministry of Finance.
The meeting was also attended by IMF Mission Chief, Ernesto Ramirez Rigo, along with a delegation of specialized experts.
It is to note that Jaber and Rigo held a work meeting this morning, during which they reviewed the outcome of the meetings held since the last meeting on Friday. They also reviewed preparations for the expanded meeting held this afternoon.
On the other hand, Jaber held a meeting with a European Union delegation that included representatives from the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, and the European Investment Fund. The meeting reportedly discussed the progress of joint cooperation in the areas of economic reform, infrastructure modernization, and digital transformation.
