President of the Republic Joseph Aoun stressed the importance of combating corruption and restoring public trust in state institutions as critical steps toward Lebanon’s recovery, stating: “Our crisis is rooted in years of unaccountability.” His remarks came during a meeting at Baabda Palace with a delegation from the Lebanese Business Council in Abu Dhabi, led by Dr. Charbel Abi Akel.
President Aoun noted that accountability is finally taking root, with the judiciary pursuing cases and dismantling red lines that once shielded the powerful. “When there is justice, trust is rebuilt, between the state and the people, and between Lebanon and the international community,” he said.
Aoun praised the Lebanese diaspora as the country’s most valuable asset, asserting that “Lebanon is not bankrupt but robbed,” and emphasizing the role of expatriates in supporting the country’s economy and identity. “From Brazil to Australia, there’s a Lebanese fingerprint in every major project,” Aoun added.
During the meeting, Dr. Abi Akel expressed full support for the President’s reform agenda, including e-governance, digital identity systems, and state modernization. The Council also proposed contributing expertise in agriculture, digital archiving, and the revitalization of state media.
In a related development, President Aoun met with Finance Minister Yassine Jaber and Central Bank Governor Karim Souaid to assess the country’s financial outlook.
Later, the President held talks with MP Michel Moawad, who voiced strong backing for state sovereignty and institutional reconstruction.
Moawad described the current period as a historic turning point and urged national unity to end foreign interference and internal strife.
President Aoun also welcomed a delegation from the Federation of Health Mutual Funds, where discussions centered on launching a universal health card and supporting social protection for Lebanese citizens.
