Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcomed MP Osama Saad. Following the meeting, Saad said discussions focused on what he described as a longstanding environmental crisis in the city of Sidon, resulting from the accumulation of hundreds of thousands of tons of waste since 2011 without proper treatment.
Saad stated that the waste treatment plant has failed to fully process waste in line with health, environmental standards, and its contract with the Saida Municipality, despite receiving payments as if full treatment were being carried out. He said this raises suspicions of financial corruption and waste of public funds, noting that millions of dollars were paid for services not properly delivered. Saad confirmed he had filed a report with the financial prosecution and called for investigations, criticizing successive municipalities and environment ministers for failing to enforce the contract.
The lawmaker added that the suspension of waste intake from the Jezzine Municipalities Union exposed the core problem, which he attributed to the plant’s poor performance. Saad also raised concerns about the situation at Sidon Governmental Hospital and other public issues.
Separately, Salam received the President of the Court of Audit Judge Mohammad Badran, accompanied by Public Prosecutor Judge Fawzi Khamis and chamber presidents Judges Abdel Reda Nasser, Inam Al-Boustani, and Nelly Abi Younes. Judge Badran said the delegation congratulated the prime minister on the New Year, briefed him on the completion of state budget accounts and progress toward restoring financial order, and called for appointing chamber presidents and opening a new intake for financial judges to address vacancies.
