Greece contained wildfires in the suburbs of Athens, but evacuations of at-risk areas continued as strong winds are expected early next week.

The fierce winds fueled wildfires from areas near the capital to others surrounding the historic ancient city of Olympia, causing at least one death and destroying homes and agricultural land.

The worst fire broke out in the small town of Keratea, southwest of the capital, where firefighters found the body of an elderly man inside a burned building.

A fire brigade spokesperson said the fire there is under control but not yet extinguished.
