Australia has sharply criticised Israel after it revoked visas held by Canberra’s diplomatic representatives to the Palestinian Authority, escalating tensions between the two governments.

The move came hours after Australia cancelled the visa of far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition, who had been scheduled to speak at events organised by the Australian Jewish Association.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described Israel’s decision as an “unjustified reaction”, accusing Netanyahu’s government of isolating itself.

“At a time when dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever, the Netanyahu government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts towards peace and a two-state solution,” Wong said in a statement.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed the revocation, adding that his ministry would now scrutinise all official Australian visa applications for entry into Israel.

He also linked the decision to Australia’s planned recognition of a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.
