While U.S. President Donald Trump received a ceremonial welcome at Kuala Lumpur Airport, local media showed a different scene across the Malaysian capital, where protesters took to the streets declaring him “unwelcome.”
Crowds gathered at Merdeka Square from 9:00 am under tight security, carrying banners denouncing Trump and Israel, chanting “Freedom for Palestine,” and wearing Palestinian keffiyehs in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Trump arrived in Malaysia to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit, with an agenda that includes mediating a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, as well as building on previous ceasefire efforts in Gaza. However, those diplomatic efforts have done little to ease the anger of many Malaysians, particularly pro-Palestinian groups, who continue to view him as complicit in the war on Gaza because of his administration’s support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
