Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has met Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The Vatican described the talks as “cordial” and said “it was recognised that there is an urgent need to provide assistance to the civilian population in Gaza and to end the conflict by pursuing a two-state solution.”
Abbas thanked the pope for speaking out in support of “a just peace in Palestine” and “for the need to alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian people”, the Wafa news agency reported.
Abbas also briefed the pontiff on Israel’s “escalation” in the occupied West Bank, including settler attacks and “the violation of the sanctity of Christian and Islamic holy sites, especially in East Jerusalem”.
