While the two sides held talks for the first time since the 12-day war last June, in an atmosphere described as serious and positive, with talk of another round next week, reports from Israel reflect a sense of discomfort. This was reflected in the sudden advancement of a planned visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump and hold talks on Iran.
Israeli Channel 14 reported that Netanyahu is heading to Washington with a “list of demands” for Trump, including:
A complete end to Iran’s nuclear program.
Preventing Iran from enriching uranium or possessing the capacity to do so.
Transferring enriched uranium out of Iran.
Limiting the range of Iranian missiles to 300 kilometers.
Dismantling Tehran’s “arms” in the region.
Similarly, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) highlighted that the urgent visit is due to the negotiations so far being limited to the nuclear program only.
The broadcaster also noted “Israeli concerns that Trump might backtrack on points agreed with Israel before the start of talks with Iran.”
Observers say Israel wants to declare the negotiation track a failure and push for war with Iran as soon as possible, but the United States may have other plans. After many expected a U.S. strike in recent days, its postponement has angered Israel.
