What is it with this tune that’s made it so catchy and hard to get out of your head?  Is it the groove and disco throwbacks pushing the song to the top of the charts since its debut? Or could it be the clever Marketing scheme orchestrating its release on Miley Cyrus’ ex-husband’s birthday, January the thirteenth.

It’s a mixture of these and other factors that cooked up the first smash hit of 2023. People from all over are jumping on the trend bandwagon and creating content with it on different platforms. And I’ll tell you why.

Miley Cyrus is a pop phenomenon, no one can argue with that. She’s become a household name with a loyal following and it’s only natural that one of her new songs is her official comeback hit. Everything she releases gets huge media and fan attention, something was bound to be a breakthrough.

The clever minx announced the release of “Flowers” in the NBC New Year’s Eve Party, which she hosted for the second year in a row, alongside the Legendary Dolly Parton, an ideal platform to publicize her return to pop. She made sure there was plenty of built-up anticipation, guaranteeing a huge audience listening to the single when it came out in what is already famous for being a barren post-holidays season.

Adding fuel to the fire, the lyrics of the song seem to allude to Liam Hemsworth, Miley’s ex-husband. The couple were married for eight months in 2019, and Miley had previously made many disparaging statements about their relationship. The song itself is similar musically and a retort to Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” released ten years ago, a song Liam had once dedicated to her, or so her fans say. Miley is affirming and singing for all to hear that her happiness is not dependent on Liam, she can buy her own flowers, talk to herself for hours, take herself out dancing, hold her own hand, all rephrasing the original song by Bruno Mars. The message behind it is beautiful. The most important and gratifying relationship is (or should be) the one you have with yourself. “Built a home and watched it burn” may refer to their home in Malibu which suffered a fire in late 2018.The fans went wild with assumptions and theories triggered by the clues buried in the song and video, circulating them on TikTok most notably. Nothing like a good narrative hook to entice headlines and media hype, further catapulting a song’s success.

Here’s how you get the smash hit of 2023 on your hands and potentially of Miley’s career.
