A huge fire broke out in the forests of the US state of New Jersey, causing the evacuation of some residents and the closure of a major highway.

Authorities said many buildings were threatened, most of Barnegat was without power, a mandatory evacuation order was issued for an unspecified number of buildings in Lacey Township, and shelters were opened in some locations.
