Following rising tensions between Washington and Bogotá after the U.S. military carried out strikes in the Pacific “against drug-smuggling boats,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Colombian President Gustavo Petro “crazy.”
Rubio told reporters: “I believe Colombian authorities, especially the army and police, remain strongly loyal to America. But the only problem in Colombia is its crazy president,” adding, “This man is crazy, not in full possession of his mental faculties.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete HeGseth announced that the U.S. military “killed five suspected drug traffickers in strikes targeting two ships in the eastern Pacific, as part of President Donald Trump’s expanded use of the armed forces in his anti-drug campaign.”
He said, “The military struck a ship in the eastern Pacific, killing two people, marking the first known U.S. military operation in the Pacific since Trump launched the new campaign targeting the drug trade.”
Hours later, HeGseth stated that “the military struck another ship in the eastern Pacific, killing three people.”
He also shared a roughly 30-second video on X showing a ship sailing before it explodes, which is attached in the news report.
In response, the Colombian president criticized the strikes, accusing the United States of violating international law.
