Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcomed a delegation of MPs who co-signed the draft law on expatriate voting, including MPs Ghassan Hasbani, Ashraf Rifi, Michel Moawad, Melhem Riachi, Mark Daou, Salim Sayegh, Elias Hankach, Antoine Habchi, George Okeis, Faisal Sayegh, and Ibrahim Mneimneh.
Following the meeting, MP Michel Moawad read a statement in which the lawmakers urged the government to swiftly submit an expedited draft law to Parliament to correct the flaws in the current electoral law that hinder Lebanese expatriates from voting in their home districts.
They stressed that the government itself had previously acknowledged legal ambiguities regarding the six parliamentary seats allocated to expatriates.
Moawad noted that Salam supports holding elections on schedule and recognizes that the current law is unworkable. He added that if Parliament fails to act, the government will assume its responsibility by submitting a draft law to ensure expatriates’ right to vote.
