At least ten people were killed and dozens injured in a stampede inside a temple in Srikakulam, in the southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
According to the Hindustan Times, the chaos was triggered by extreme overcrowding inside the temple, local authorities confirmed.
Police rushed to the scene, quickly bringing the situation under control. All injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
State Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock and offered condolences to the families of the victims.
“The stampede at the Venkateswara Temple in Kashibugga, Srikakulam, is deeply shocking,” Naidu wrote on X. “The loss of devotees in this tragic incident is heartbreaking. My deepest condolences go out to their families.”
He ordered officials to ensure urgent medical care for the wounded and directed local authorities and public representatives to visit the site and oversee relief efforts.
