Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea issued a statement responding to Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem’s claim that the November 27, 2024 agreement applies “solely to areas south of the Litani River.”
“For the sake of your credibility alone, Sheikh Naim,” Geagea said, “we affirm the following points.”
He cited UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates the Lebanese government’s authority “over all Lebanese territory” in line with Resolutions 1559 and 1680 and the Taif Accord. Geagea noted that the preamble of the November 27 agreement calls for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, stipulating that only official Lebanese forces; the Army, Internal Security Forces, General Security, State Security, Customs, and Municipal Police, may bear arms.
He further quoted the agreement’s seventh clause, which mandates the dismantling of unauthorized military structures “starting from south of the Litani.”
Geagea also referenced the Cabinet decision of August 7, 2025, reaffirming Lebanon’s commitment to the Taif Accord and UN resolutions, emphasizing state sovereignty, and the gradual elimination of all non-state armed presences, including Hezbollah, across the entire country.
He concluded: “Once again, Sheikh Naim, this clarification is made solely to preserve your credibility, nothing more, nothing less.”
