Ministers of Finance Yassin Jaber, and Public Works Fayez Rasamny toured Beirut Port alongside Port Director-General Marwan Naffi to inspect the newly delivered container scanners, a key component in strengthening the port’s security and operational systems.
The visit included stops at the Customs Building and the container terminal, where officials received a technical briefing from Terminal Director Charlie Derzi.
A press conference followed in the “Zour El-Port” hall, attended by port board members, customs and security agencies, and representatives of shipping, transit, and labor unions.
In his word, Minister Jaber congratulated the new port administration and praised Minister Rasamny for his role in advancing the project, stressing the necessity of reform in both the port and customs. He highlighted the strategic partnership with CMA CGM, which provided and will maintain the advanced scanners, capable of processing up to 100 containers per hour, a dramatic improvement over the current system.
Jaber announced upcoming upgrades in customs software, digital pre-clearance systems, and risk-assessment tools, saying the reforms will increase state revenues, curb smuggling, and accelerate clearance to within 48 hours.
In turn, Minister Rasamny emphasized that the installation of the new scanners was a major leap in port modernization, achieved through close coordination between the Ministries of Finance and Public Works, the port administration, and the Higher Council of Customs, with crucial support from CMA CGM.
Rasamny outlined three strategic goals for the new scanners:
1- Improved public services through enhanced governance, digital transformation, and faster logistics.
2- Increased state revenues, enabling fair public-sector salary adjustments.
3- Restoring Arab and Gulf confidence in Lebanese exports, noting that Gulf countries requested full scanning of all outgoing containers to ensure product safety and quality.
Rasamny said the scanners will soon be complemented by upgraded software integration between the port and customs, paving the way for a more efficient and secure logistics chain.
For his part, Director-General Naffi described the day as a “significant milestone,” marking the start of installing long-awaited scanners that will improve security, reduce delays, and raise operational efficiency. He noted that the reforms will ultimately allow citizens to complete all port-related procedures entirely online, enhancing transparency and service quality.
