Dozens of people, including some in serious condition, were injured when a lightning strike hit a crowd of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in the capital, Brasília, according to local sources.
The news site g1 reported that the group had gathered near the Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial along the Monumental Axis, waiting for the pro-Bolsonaro march amid heavy rain. The lightning struck the crowd shortly before 1:00 pm.
The Federal District Fire Department said it provided medical assistance to at least 72 people, 30 of whom were taken to hospitals, including eight in serious condition. Firefighters were already on site monitoring the demonstration and immediately set up an emergency tent to provide first aid.
Alfredo Santana, one of the attendees, described the scene to g1: “It was chaos. The lightning struck, and everyone fell. At first, we didn’t understand what had happened. People were helping each other up, running everywhere. Luckily, firefighters and emergency medical teams were already there, but so many people fell at once. The lightning hit right in front of us, very close to the speaker truck.”
