$350 Million World Bank Package to Support Lebanon
The World Bank said in a statement that its Executive Board approved yesterday 350 million dollars in new financing for Lebanon to help meet the basic needs of poor and vulnerable groups during the economic and financial recovery phase and to improve the delivery of high impact public services through the digital transformation of the public sector.

The funding covers two new projects aimed at delivering tangible benefits to citizens by strengthening social protection for vulnerable groups promoting the economic inclusion of women and youth reinforcing social safety net systems and accelerating the digitalization of key public services.

Commenting on the decision World Bank Middle East Regional Director Jean Christophe Carret said Lebanon’s recovery remains fragile adding that the new financing package aims to generate broad and high impact social benefits by enhancing social protection economic inclusion and digital transformation. He noted that these efforts will support economic recovery job creation and improve the government’s ability to deliver effective public services.

The statement said Lebanon’s overlapping crises have deepened economic and social challenges pushing large segments of the population into poverty increasing food insecurity and malnutrition limiting access to healthcare and severely weakening public service delivery.

The first project valued at 200 million dollars focuses on strengthening social safety nets by supporting cash transfers to poor and vulnerable Lebanese families expanding access to economic opportunities and social services particularly for women and youth and reinforcing institutional systems including the development of the Daam platform which supports the Aman cash assistance program.

The second project worth 150 million dollars aims to accelerate Lebanon’s digital transformation by improving access to essential government services and economic opportunities supporting businesses and entrepreneurs through a safer digital environment and enhancing government efficiency through stronger digital platforms data management secure government data infrastructure and national cybersecurity systems.
