Member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc Ali Fayyad said the President’s position raises serious concern, arguing that he attempted to promote the US memorandum rather than distance himself from it. He noted that the President described it as a statement rather than an agreement and said its content aligns with the November 27 declaration, yet did not raise any objections to its substance, nor deny Lebanon’s involvement in drafting or approving it. He added that it is particularly serious that the President appears to accept the document without clearly rejecting the principle of freedom of movement for Israel, despite calling for a ceasefire.
In an interview, he questioned how it is possible to speak about waiting for a date for the next round of negotiations while attacks continue, Israeli escalation intensifies, and village destruction campaigns proceed.
Fayyad said there is clear confusion in the official Lebanese position and a lack of transparency and clarity, describing it as a sign of weakness that is easily observed. He also rejected the claim that the US memorandum matches the November 27 declaration, saying there are major differences. He pointed out that the memorandum limits the right of self-defense to Israel only, whereas the November 27 declaration affirms this right for Lebanon as well. He added that the declaration also stresses the need for Israeli withdrawal, a point absent from the US memorandum.
