Thousands of protesters blocked the road leading to Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Tuesday, escalating demonstrations led by teachers demanding higher wages and pension reform, just two days before the stadium hosts the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the match is “secure,” despite the protests, which she described as “a provocation aimed at tarnishing the country’s image ahead of the world’s biggest sporting event.”

Authorities deployed thousands of security personnel and erected concrete barriers about one kilometer from Estadio Azteca to prevent protesters from reaching the venue, while demonstrators vowed to continue their action until their demands are met.
