Three women were killed and more than 30 people were injured after fireworks exploded during a religious celebration in southern Mexico, with several children among the injured.
The explosion occurred in Real del Limón, a town in the municipality of Cocula in Guerrero state, during celebrations honoring Saint James the Apostle, according to El Financiero.
Initial reports indicate that a spark from a traditional fireworks display known as a “torito” reached a nearby storage area containing fireworks materials close to a church, causing a powerful explosion.
The three women suffered severe injuries and burns and died while being transported to the General Hospital in the nearby city of Iguala. One of them was eight months pregnant.
More than 30 other people were injured, including children as young as three years old. No information has been released about their conditions.
